Adam Theis’ army of musicians, Jazz Mafia All-Stars, marches to Kuumbwa

Adam Theis is a musical whirlwind. As the kingpin of the Jazz Mafia, a San Francisco-based collective of jazz musicians that routinely backs up everyone from Carlos Santana to Thomas Dolby to legendary rapper Lyrics Born, Theis is at the center of the cyclone. Factor in his symphonic work with his hand-picked orchestra, and you can understand why in 2009, Theis was awarded the sought- after Gerbode-Hewlett Foundation Emerging Composers Grant—which brought his vision of an army of musicians working together one step closer to fruition.

The Northern California native’s ability to multitask various projects can be traced back to his time in graduate school when Theis was majoring in music composition at Sonoma State University. He was also managing and playing in a ’70s/’80s cover band and a swing band called the Savoy Swingers. But it was his jazz collective, Cannonball, that ignited a full-blown jazz scene in sleepy Sonoma.

From outside the National Association of Music Merchants convention in Anaheim, Theis remembers the early years. “Cannonball changed me,” he says. “We did just a one-off gig at a sports bar in Santa Rosa where they had jazz on Sundays. Our first show was really packed and we had a killer response—which is unusual for anywhere in Sonoma County. So we made it a monthly thing and that spun off into a lot of other projects.” Theis realized that if he could create a jazz scene in a place where few people like to go out, he could do it anywhere. He also found out that audiences appreciate familiarity alongside more challenging pieces. “The formula I arrived at was to mix it up a lot.”

Fast forward to 1998 when the young composer/trombonist moved to San Francisco’s Mission District where all his ideas morphed into the Jazz Mafia. Today, the group boasts more than 50 members—there are smaller versions of the larger collective like Shotgun Wedding Quintet and the Realistic Orchestra, but the Jazz Mafia Symphony is the real gem. “We still do shows with the Realistic Orchestra but the symphony has taken on a lot more of our focus,” says Theis. This has resulted in the symphonies ‘Brass Bows and Beats’ and ‘The Emperor Norton Suite,’ that have wowed jazz fans across the country.

On Thursday, Feb. 2, the Jazz Mafia All-Stars head to Kuumbwa Jazz with vocalist Crystal Monee Hall (who also tours with Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart’s band) at the helm.

Asked about the dynamic of a large ensemble, Theis explained, “There are core members who really help manage the band and arrange the music. To book a gig I just send out one email and text—as long as the core members can make a show, I book it. What’s changed is the core members have grown to a higher number—the symphony now has 12 core members.”

Theis appreciates the opportunity to grow with a group of musicians over the span of a decade. “We’re all in this boat together and try to push each other to accomplish new things,” he says. As a bandleader he is also committed to bringing out the best in those he works with. “When I work with new people I want to hear something different, unique.” As a composer and player Theis has learned to work with his rotating cast and not to force his opinion. “I try to involve people a lot, but at a certain point not everything can be designed by committee. I try to make decisions that make the core people happy—and every once in a while I fail, but they understand it.”

As for how he manages to keep so many projects going with so many players, Theis has a simple explanation: “It’s based on trust.”

The Jazz Mafia All-Stars play at 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, at Kuumbwa Jazz, 320-2 Cedar St., Santa Cruz. Tickets are $20/adv, $23/door. For more information, call 427-2227.

A Note from Adam:

Hey friends, I hope you’re having a healthy and warm January as it’s getting colder and colder outside (and hopefully will finally start SNOWING arrgh!) In this installment of our Bi-Monthly Newsletter I’m gonna fill you in on a few things that we’ve got going on while we at Jazz Mafia keep it mellow and gear up for a busy Spring.

As I write this I’m on my way to Los Angeles for the NAMM show, the World’s largest music industry trade show. I’ve always been curious about it and finally my homie Uriah Duffy has talked to me into it! Also in attendance repping Jazz Mafia will be Brandon Werlin. We’re going to be doing tons of networking as well as checking out new music technology and gear. We’ll be there through Sunday then I’m rushing back to SF to perform at the Undercover Tribute to Nick Drake’s Pink Moon. If you’re not familiar with the Undercover series, you should be! Our good friend and champion for Bay Area creative music Lyz Luke has put together a successful series that showcases approximately 10 bands each performing one song each from a classic/legendary record from the past. These shows are a unique event and the perfect way for listeners of different styles of music to hear about 50 of the Bay Area’s finest musicians all under one roof in a 3 hour time period!

This time around, it’s Nick Drake’s “Pink Moon” album from 1971. Jazz Mafia will be performing the last song on the record “From the Morning”. For this one, I put together something different, featuring The Velvet Teen vocalist Judah Nagler on vox/guitar, Joe Bagale on drums and myself on bass and synth plus a very special secret surprise whoo hoo! I’ll also be playing for the first time on tuba with one of my favorite Bay Area bands Brass Menazerie doing the first song on the album, which is the title track. Crap, how am I gonna fit all those instruments in the car? Anyway, read below for the show info, hope you can make it.

On Thursday, Jan 26th, I’m excited about another collaboration we’re doing at the Boom Boom Room with the amazing Wil Blades on B3 Organ and clavinet. This time around, for the first time, we’re playing with ex-Charlie Hunter Drummer Simon Lott, who is super good. Mike Olmos and I will be doing our thing with them and it promises to be a night of much variety, heavy grooves and adventures into the Jazz/Funk Odyssey!

If you are curious about violinist Shaina Evoniuk’s current 4 month tour checkout her Blog HERE to read up on her adventures in China over the past few weeks. She’s doing some great stuff out there. Go SHAINA!

Jazz Mafia has been super busy in the studio, just finished horn tracks for a great band called Dead Winter Carpenters (featuring our friend Fiddlin’ Jenni!) and also some rockin Afro-Beat trombone stuff for Afro Massive. Our list of upcoming recording projects is long and we’re having a great time with all these opportunities. Time to get back to work!

A Note from Adam:

Happy New Year friends of the Jazz Mafia! We put together a slideshow of many of the highlights of 2011 including our shows at Stern Grove and Central Park, as well as our adventures backing up and recording with Blackalicious, Chali 2na, Beck, Zion I & The Grouch, Martin Luther, The Coup, Latyrx (Lyrics Born & Lateef) and much much more. Thanks to Bill Evans for taking many of the pictures as well as helping put the slideshow together. Here it is:

A huge thank you to all the homies, friends, family that came out to Jazz Mafia’s 11 Year Anniversary on Friday, 12/23 at Brick and Mortar in San Francisco. A capacity crowd of diehard JM fans turned out to peep some of their favorite Bay Area music soldiers as well as some new faces and many special surprise guests. Here’s a little recap for ya:

- Aima The Dreamer with live band KILLED it. Hard to believe this was Aima’s first time performing her own music with backed by a rhythm section as a solo set. It was one of the major highlights of the night for me and I was glad to be involved.

- Jazz Mafia String Quartet was a surprise addition to the show and went on really early with an acoustic set in the middle of the dance floor. The Audience stood captivated in a circle around the band and the String Quartet (with trombone of course!) played completely acoustic. Props to the audience for maintaining a very low volume level for the set, it made for a really special beginning of the night. Special guests included Joe Bagale on percussion (Cajon specifically), rapping and beatboxing with Soulati and Infinite from Felonious, upright bass from Daniel Fabricant and 3 songs with guest vocalist Sonya D who sounded beautiful and was a pleasure to work with!

- A surprise appearance from Martin Luther happened on the last song of the JM String Quartet which happened to be Wham’s “Everything She Wants”…Martin and Sonya D improvised a very happening duet over it which included Sonya changing the lurics to “And now I say that I’m having YOUR baby…” it was a good laugh and very in the moment.Props! After that we decided to add one more featuring Martin on one of his originals, Touch the Sky, which we performed with him with the Orchestra at Stern Grove last Summer.

- Soulati put on a great set of all solo looping, beatboxing, rapping, singing and amazed many, made many shake their bodies and made others drink more. Perfect. It’s a beautiful thing what this man can do with a looper!

- Joe Bagale rocked a flawless TRIO set with a few sit ins from the horn section. I really dig Joe’s stripped down set and Chris Mcgee and Brandon sound great singing the harmonies. Joe got the whole audience involved and brought the energy up a few notches.

- The Shotgun Wedding Quintet rocked a fun set of lots of new stuff including many of the Cab Calloway remixes we’d been in the studio recording until the wee hours of the morning the night before. We were joined by guests Rich Armstrong, Mike Olmos, P Dub (on the Bass Drum!) and Shaina Evoniuk. Thanks to Emily for the celebratory shots!

- Honorable mention goes to Brass Mafia who’s set got cut short because of everything running quite late but still rocked it strong for the last part of the night with a powerful party set.
