Hmmmm. I don’t know. This doesn’t feel good. I does not feel RIGHT. Episode after episode is letting me down. I’ll watch that week’s installment and at the end when the credits are rolling I’ll say to myself: “Well, that sucked. But I’m sure next week it will make up for it.” Then I’ll tune in the next week and go through the same ritual and say the same thing to myself, hoping the next week will make up for it again.
What is happening here? Why is it all becoming so far fetched? Why are the characters (even the old trusted one’s) annoying the hell out of me? Why does the story inch along, not in the methodical and surprising way the wire usually does, but in a dumb obvious way? All the past seasons of the Wire flowed like a beautiful river that involved all the droplets of water, major and minor, and towards the end would turn left and go off a spectacular waterfall (the murder of Ziggy’s dad, the collapse of Hamsterdam, Stringer Bell’s murder, Boaties death, etc.). This one just clunks along like its being forced down a sewage pipe.
I respect all the minds that work on the Wire so I do still have hope that they will turn this around and shock me with their genius. But right now thing’s are getting ridiculous (Omar stumbling around with a broomstick getting the drop on ever one of Marlow’s corners? These are the stupidest scenes I’ve seen in The Wire. The actors don’t even look like they believe it.) The Wire may have been too perfect the last four seasons and all that was left was a downward spiral. But with the acting in the newsroom and the insane thread Jimmy and Lester have gone off on with the homeless murders I feel like I’m sometimes watching a really good episode of Law and Order which means I’m watching a really bad episode of The Wire. Please David Simon, end this series on a good note. Please.
