A Note From Adam 8.03.10

It's only been a week since the end of our 10 Year weekly Jazz Mafia Tuesdays run and we've been so busy we've almost forgotten about how sad we are that we won't be doing them anymore! Lots of action going on in the world of Jazz Mafia.

- Tues 8/3 we’ll be celebrating our first week of having Tuesdays off by going to our good friend DJ Centipede’s long-running successful weekly party “Change The Beat” at SOM on 16th st. near S. Vanness. Many members of Jazz Mafia will be rolling thru the club around 10 or 11 to chill and maybe even do some jamming. Come on thru and let’s kick it!
- We just came back from a strong showing of Realistic Orchestra and Shotgun Wedding Quintet and friends in Pasadena. Our goal is to be heading down to SoCal at least every few months. Thanks to all our new family and friends down in SoCal and especially the staff at The Levitt Pavillion and Neomeze
- Currently about 20 of us are packing for our trip later this week to perform Brass, Bows & Beats at the legendary Newport Jazz Festival in Rhode Island on Saturday, Aug 7th. The lineup is insane and features some of my personal music heroes including Maria Schneider Orchestra! Sunday Aug 8th Shotgun Wedding Quintet and Crystal Monee Hall will perform at the reputable Rockwood Music Hall. This is the NYC DEBUT of Shotgun, so please tell anyone you know and let’s kick some ass
- JM Horns have had quite the time doing 3 shows with singer-songwriter Eric Lindell last week including a few shows in my hometown area of Santa Rosa. People are really happy with the new record we did with Eric “Between Rest and Motion“.

Jazz Mafia in the studio:
- Karyn Paige is finishing work on her debut e.p.. It’s sounding so good, I’ve been lucky to hear many of the tracks. It features guest spots from Dublin andAima and it’s being produced by two Jazz Mafia all-stars - Joe Bagale and Matt Berkeley. Simultaneously, Joe is also working on his next record and we are all mid-way thru the Supertaster recording we started in December and will be going back to finish that in the next few months. Crazy!

– Brass Mafia’s long-awaited nearly completed record is finally being mixed! Whoo-Hoo. Thanks Chris Fletcher!

-I’ve had the great opportunity to work with one of the most reputable producers in the Bay Area, Chief Xcel, one half of Blackalicious; I’m a HUGE fan of all the work the Chief has done and have always imagined my orchestrations over his beats but NEVER did I dream of all that with the vocals of Ledesi! The new project is called Loudspeaker and is a collab between Chief Xcel and Ledesi, features Jazz Mafia Horns/Strings extensively and will be a must hear for fans of modern gritty soul music. It’s the best singing I’ve ever heard of Ledesi on record. We’ll be finishing up that record after we get back from Newport. Me and the musicians who’ve worked hard on this project are really stoked on it!

-I’ve been in the studio working mad beats for the new Zion i record along with Mafia drummers P Dub Korte and Brandon Werlin. We’ve been working with producer Amp Live and vocalist Zuumbi coming up with really fresh collabs that stay true to the spirit of their legacy. About to start working on the horn arrangements which we’ll lay down soon…... This record is moving FAST.

- Lastly a huge HUG to all our friends who came out last week to our last Jazz Mafia Tuesday. After 10 years of our award-winning Tuesday series, if you haven’t heard, we’ve decided to move on to bigger and better opportunities. You can read more about this decision at jazzmafia.com. We had an incredible time at our last party, capacity crowd and dozens of musicians took the stage for one last Tuesday jam including performances from Spaceheater, Brass Mafia, Joe Bagale, Shotgun Wedding Quintet and a mega jam at the end featuring Felonious MCs and a dozen more musicians. Big up to Coda for all their love and support since we moved our night to their venue exactly one year ago. We’ll be performing at their anniversary party later this month so check it!

Peace,

Adam
