ahmadThis is the first version recorded by Ahmad on his classic early recording “Chamber Music of the New Jazz” which is some of my most favorite trio playing of all time – Guitar, bass and piano and swings just as hard as if they had a drummer.

Anyway, listen to this version then checkout the next version of Miles Davis/Gil Evans doing their remake of it. This is what I love so much about arranging music – Taking something so beautiful and making it even more multi-dimensional.

This is the version that was re-written/arranged by Gil Evans for the Miles Davis Orchestral Jazz Album “Miles Ahead/+19″ which is one of my all time fave albums.Check out what Gil does with the material from the original Ahmad Trio Versio…n – He uses almost every note they played and spreads the music around the 19 piece orchestra letting nothing go to waste…Miles even quotes tons of Ahmad’s original improvisations and Gil orchestrates off the original improvisations as well and does one of my favorite Gil Evans signatures, taking the left hand comping that Ahmad did during his piano solo and scoring it for Trombones during the Trumpet solo – Like Buttah!
