Okay folks, if you haven’t been to a Jazz Mafia Tuesday when Mike Boo and Teeko sit in, come to the next one! These two have sat in on the turntables twice now and both times it was a great show. Each set goes uninterrupted for the most part, and the new layers brought by Mike and Teeko make for a different sound than what you might be used to hearing from the Jazz Mafia.
Also sitting in this past Tuesday were Joe Bagale, on drums and vocals, and Matt Berekely on keys. These two came over from Oakland to have a fun session with Adam, Mike and Teeko. Joe, whom you may have heard sing with Realistic Orchestra, switched up the beat from some real downtempo stuff to a fast jungle pace and everywhere in between. He looped vocals every now and then, most notably at the close of the evening, when he built this great layered vocal outro.
Matt Berkeley worked up a good sweat on the keyboards. His melodies were tight and his solos were strong and energetic. Next time these guys sit in, come out and listen! Adam rounded out the crew on bass, keys and bone. He played some bass loops and at one point was beating on the railing (amongst other things) with a drumstick. The guys had some good freeform time during both sets.
Suzy and Rachel were rockin’ the paint and brushes. Here’s a nod to Suzy for using her cell phone to light the canvas in the dark! Way to get it done!
So check the calendar soon for the next show with any of these players. It sounded like Teeko and Mike were going to come in once a month, which would make for some great Tuesday nights.
Oh yeah, as always, pics from Tuesday and last Friday on the Jazz Mafia Flickr page.
