Bruno’s, Tuesday 10.9.07
Post by Steve Reddell
On October 9th , The Jazz Mafia Trio made an emphatic return to JM Tuesday’s at Bruno’s. Joe and Adam had been touring with Thomas Dolby since Sep 12th, and Mr. Korte didn’t play last week. With friends and family in the house and on stage, the guys dropped an explosive performance.
After a brief intro, Adam welcomed turntablists Mike Boo and Teeko (of 4OneFunk fame) and the boys got down… waaaay down. Patrick kept the pace with a mixture of dope beats and some crazy cymbal work. Joe laid some melodies on the keys and had an insane sax solo that was one of the highlights of the show. Adam’s basslines were grooveworthy and he dropped some nice accents with the trombone.
Mike Boo turned simple notes into multi-toned rhythms with his fingers and fader. Teeko dropped some dope melodies, often impersonating other intstruments. Together they added new depths to the JM Sound and kept the crowd moving. Reach Mike Boo at myspace.com/mikebooginowski. More of Teeko can be seen at 4Onefunk.com
Kenny Brooks helped close the first set by lighting up his saxophone. The guys were happy to have this talented musician playing with them. You can see more of him at kennybrooks.com
After folks ran out into the rain to move their cars, interim doorman Danny Grewen stepped in for a trombone sessions (and, as always, a joke for the crowd.) Front and center, he showed why he is considered one of the best in town. Conceit took the stage to spit some verses and freestyle. TopR and Young Mars took their turns and Sam I Am closed the mic session with a rapid fire delivery.
Even Francis and Mike Olmos rounded out the second set with their respective horns. Some b-boys and live painting by Rachel were nice accents to a fun night. The band gave the wet, cold crowd an amazing show, confirming why Tuesdays belong to the Jazz Mafia.
