DUBLIN’S THOUGHTS: On Mad Men
After giving it some thought I have come to the conclusion that if I ever get fired from the Shotgun Wedding Quintet I’m going to get a job with The American Movie Classics channel. I’m in love. While almost every single channel on cable let’s me down with bullshit a majority of the time, AMC always comes through. Another prison doc on MSNBC? Jesus. Carlos Mencia on Comedy Central? Argggggggh. What’s on AMC? Michael Mann’s Last of The Mohicans, that’s what?
But even with great movies almost 24 hours a day AMC has stepped their game up 10 fold with their very first original scripted hour long series. For those who don’t know it’s called Mad Men and God damn it’s fascinating. It takes place in the world of Madison Avenue advertising executives in 1960 but it might as well be an alien planet. The way the show presents the styles, mannerisms, habits, and culture of that time is the genius of it all. People smoke constantly, drink all day, racism and sexism are accepted, and everybody dresses to a T.
But what’s truly great about the Mad Men is that by showing 1960 (which is really just an extension of the 1950’s) as honestly as it can we see how little this country has REALLY changed. Sure, these days it’s frowned upon for men to sexually harass women in the workplace like they do on this show, but has the attitude towards women among the corporate elite good old boys really changed? Probably not.
Mad Men is on at 10pm on Thursdays on AMC. Please watch it. This has been a Dublin Thought.

My cousin, Maggie Siff is on that show! She plays Rachel Menkin. Look out for her…
