Jazz Mafia have been lucky to be chosen by Dan The Automator to be the house band for his new “Audio Alchemy” Series at Yoshi’s in SF. Over the past two months this bi-monthly party (2nd and 4th Saturdays) has been showcasing experts in the field of turntablism, producers, rappers and live music. The Jazz Mafia Trio of Adam Theis (bass, trombone, synths), Joe Cohen (saxes, keyboards) and Pat Korte (drums, sampler) have backed up Lateef the Truthspeaker, Casual (Hieroglyphics), Qbert (see article/vids here), Kid Koala and now Mixmaster Mike and Shortkut. Upcoming collabs include Just Blaze, Gift of Gab and Blackalicious…

On this particular night it was super special to not only have Mixmaster Mike in the house but also Shortkut on stage rocking with him as well in a completely improvised fashion with the band. Making the whole night even crazier was having Qbert and Apollo in the house, so it was basically an informal Invisibl Skratch Piklz Reunion backstage! Just being around all those incredible talents was an enlightening experience. Look for a formal Piklz reunion soon!
