On May 25th, 2007 the Jazz Mafia All-Stars performed a Miles Davis Birthday concert which included a 9 piece ensemble playing the music from the groundbreaking historic recording “Birth of the Cool”. Even though the even was held at 7pm it was a capacity jazz-loving crowd and turned out to be a smashing success. Thanks to Eric Moffet for being there and spinning some great Miles vinyl and Swerbo for documenting it on video and audio.
The band included Mike Olmos and Erik Jekabson (trumpet and flugelhorn) Joe Cohen and Charlie Gurke (Alto and Bari saxes) Adam Theis (trombone) Mike Rinta (tuba) and the solid rhythm section of Marcus shelby (bass) Adam Shulman (piano) and Jeff Marrs (drums). The night ended up being so much fun that we’ve decided to continue performing with the band and already have a show coming up at Bo’s BBQ on Thursday, July 14th. Look for more from this project.

Following the Miles tribute was an impromptu hip-hop jam session featuring Adam Theis, Joe Cohen and Max Mcveety from Crown City Rockers on drums. Headnodic 9also from Crown City) was spinning records in the front room and DJ Saurus was holding it down in the back room with the band. An amazing lineup of vocalists graced the stage including Dublin, Orukusaki and Senca. The club was very impressed with the tunrout for both events that night so look for more Jazz Mafia events at bruno’s on weekends.
