It is probably impossible to replicate the dazzling energy and creativity that made the live performance of the Jazz Mafia’s hip-hop symphony “Brass, Bows and Beats” one of the most memorable jazz events of last year. More than 60 musicians came together at the Palace of Fine Arts for the world premiere of the piece created by Adam Theis (foreground in hat), with lyrics by Karyn Paige and Lyrics Born, among others; arrangements by artists such as guitarist Jon Monahan and vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Joe Bagale; and performances by trumpeter Dave Scott and violinists Anthony Blea and Mads Tolling. The piece is an epic stylistic mashup, which, in the hands of lesser talents, would have been a mess. But the blend of jazz, hip-hop and even a bit of Astor Piazzolla honors the traditions of jazz and, at the same time, lights the way to its ever more inclusive future.
